The children have found out about Lunar New Year, which is a fifteen-day celebration starting this year on 22nd January. The children found out about the traditions associated with the festival and how it is celebrated around the world including, special meals, fireworks and money being given in red envelopes because red is seen to be a lucky colour. Mrs Chyla cooked a fabulous Chinese themed menu at lunchtime and decorated the hall. The children loved having a go with chopsticks to eat their dinner and took a fortune cookie home too! 

Alongside Herons, Dragonflies had a special assembly about Burns Night, we talked about Robert Burns the author and how Burns night is celebrated on or around 25^th January each year. We talked about Haggis, neep and tatties and the song Auld Lang Syne. Some of the children shared their knowledge of Scotland with us. The children in Dragonflies then looked at the Scottish flag and had a go at making some of their own, which they were very proud of and took home with them!

To end the week, we have been finding out about the RSPB Big Birdwatch and with Miss Garrett, the children created a bird feeder in their Forest School Session to take home and put in their gardens to help the birds in this cold weather. Next week, they will be making their own binoculars for some bird spotting, please could we kindly ask for donations of tubes, which could be used to make these before their lesson on Friday 3^rd February.
